Story of Atul Harijan (M)

Atul Harijan, a unmarried boy from Bilaspur, Palhinandan, has faced the silent challenge of being deaf and mute from birth. Living with his parents and two brothers, Atul is the only one in his family with this disability, a factor that has often left him feeling ignored and isolated. His family, like many others, did not know sign language, making communication within the home even more difficult. Despite these challenges, Atul's humble nature and quiet determination have always shone through.
As the youngest of his siblings, Atul carries the heavy burden of being the sole breadwinner for his family. While his brothers are present, it is Atul who stepped up at a young age to support his household. Due to a financial crisis at home, Atul had to leave school after the 6th grade, halting his education. However, it was during his school years that he learned sign language, a skill that would later prove invaluable in navigating his world.
Atul's journey into the workforce began at the tender age of 13. His first job was working on a handloom in Kathmandu, a trade he excelled at for 11 years. Despite his youth, Atul became an essential provider for his family. His sense of responsibility is evident in his words: "I have a fear of losing my parents and who will take care of them if something happens to me." This fear keeps Atul focused on his work, leaving him little time or energy to form friendships or socialize with others.
A year ago, Atul's life took a new turn when Dinesh sir called him to Pokhara, offering him an opportunity at Yes Helping Hands. Since then, he has been working at the factory, producing an impressive 12 shawls per day. While Atul does not engage much in conversation with his coworkers, he finds solace in his work and in the supportive environment created by Yes Helping Hands. The company’s commitment to helping the physically challenged, marginalized individuals, and single mothers resonates deeply with Atul, who feels grateful for the opportunity it has provided him.
Though his journey has been marked by financial struggles and the challenges of living with a disability, Atul remains resilient. His quiet determination to work hard and provide for his family is a testament to his strength. Atul is not just a worker; he is a reminder of the power of perseverance and the profound impact that organizations like Yes Helping Hands can have on the lives of those who need it most.
